FAQs

Red balloon with the number 14 printed on it.
  • We run a wide range of fun and inspiring activities for children, young people, and even adults. Have a look at our calendar of activities for what’s coming up.

  • We are located in Totton Shopping Centre, just between Savers and Papa Johns. For further information and directions, take a look at our ‘How to Find Us’ area.

  • A referral is when a recognised professional (teacher, social worker, GP) signposts an individual or a family to a service or activity that might help them. We accept referrals from professionals for all activities in our hub, and you can make one here.

  • You can turn up to any one of our drop-in sessions without letting us know first. We do require you to pre-book for activities such as our youth theatre, training, and summer holiday activities. If in doubt, just contact us, and we will be happy to tell you how to get involved.

  • We try to offer most of our activities for free, as we don't want cost to be a barrier for people to take part. Our school holiday activities also include a free lunch for all children and young people, so parents/guardians don't have to worry about providing them with food.

We do charge for a few of our events, such as baby and toddler dance and youth counselling, as these are run by external providers. We also charge for our training events.

  • We receive no regular funding or support; every year we have to fundraise to cover the cost of the hub and our work. The majority of our costs are supported by a mixture of funders and supporters, which have included Arts Council England, the Henry Smith Charity, the Baring Foundation, and the Rayne Foundation. We also receive donations and make some money touring our outdoor art installations around the country. If you would like to support us please do so here.

  • We would love for you to help us. There are many ways to get involved in what we do. Go to our ‘Take Part’ page for more information on the many ways you can support.

  • We are a creative hub for the people of Totton; we welcome anyone of any age. However, over the next three years we have a focus on supporting children and young people aged between 7 and 18, so a lot of our activities are designed to cater to this age group.

  • No. Most of our activities do not require any prior experience or knowledge. This is because we want our work to be accessible to as many people as possible.

  • Our hub is very close to a range of public transport links; please look at our ‘How to find us’ section for more information. There is step-free access into our building. We do not have accessible toilets, but there are accessible toilets close by in Costa, which our participants can use.

Access to upstairs is via a set of stairs.

There is also a calm space upstairs for those who need it, and we also provide calm areas downstairs when activities are taking place.

We provide activity materials in accessible formats, and our performances often come with easy-read guides and audio descriptions.

  • Yes. We have a range of touring outdoor installations that events and venues can book. Please take a look at our page, ‘I want to book Fluid Motion for an event’. We can run workshops in schools and other education settings; go to our page, ‘I want Fluid Motion in my school’. We also hire out the Totton Creative Hub; you can find out more information here.

  • We use a range of methods to understand how our work is having an impact on communities and individuals. We host open days and public events that allow people to tell us how we are doing and what they want to see happening in the future. We survey all participants who take part in regular activities with us, asking them a few questions about their health and well-being. We also create two or three case studies a year, where we track the journey of a few individuals who engage with us.

  • We offer a range of training events, including CPD for teachers, which can be found here, and training for artists and facilitators here.

  • Fluid Motion is a registered charity that has established safeguarding policies in place to ensure a safe environment for everyone. You can request a copy of our safeguarding policy by emailing our Executive Director here.

Our staff are all emergency first aid and mental health first aiders and have up-to-date child protection and safeguarding vulnerable adults training. Our staff and volunteers are constantly upskilling themselves so that we remain up to date with the latest legislation, best practices, and policies.

We have a robust system in place for managing referrals and safeguarding concerns, which is linked to our local authority safeguarding board (Hampshire Safeguarding Children Partnership).

Our workshops and courses are all designed to have moments of reflection and check-ins as well as separate spaces for participants to go if they need some quiet time.
